John "Johnny Moon" Pieruzzi
Athens , NY

Grew up in Athens , NY . Started playing alto saxophone at the age of 9 years under the watchful eye of Frank "Super" Apa (a well-known jazz and big band sax player from the 30's and 40's - also John's uncle). John's big inspiration came from his cousin Michael Apa, who was and still is a professional tenor sax player. These two influences started John off in the right direction and it's been non-stop ever since. The tradition is still continued today, as his grandson John Michael Dedrick will be starting saxophone lessons soon. With any luck, the tradition will continue well into the 21 st century. Some of the bands John has played with include White, Hot & Blue; B-Side Band; Johnny Rabb and the Jailhouse Rockers; Solid Ground; Jim Weider Band; Willy Pearce Blues Band; the Digits; Big Joe Fitz Blues Band; at the Catskill 2001 Jazz Festival with Trevor Lawrence (of Paul Butterfield and Rolling Stones fame); Tom Healey Band; the Dirt Boys; Avis Davis Band, to name a few.
Formed Johnny Moon & Starz in early 2005, playing blues, jazz, funk, classic and contemporary rock and roll. |

When you take Accordion lessons starting at age 12 it’s only natural that you would move up to a Hammond B-3, Korg CX3 and a Kurzweil PC-88. Craig has held the chairman of the board position, keyboard that is, playing with Soul Sanction and Shades of Brass in the 70’s, backing blues singer Rory Block in the 80’s and pumping it out for Solid Ground throughout the 90’s. Now he’s laying it down a solidly soulful keyboard for Johnny Moon & Starz.
